In most cases, a new ice machine is going to initially product great ice – whether it has a filter or not. As time goes on, you will start to notice the ice changing if you do not have a filter. You may see the ice becoming cloudy or not as hard as it once was. Eventually, you will notice odors and bad tastes with your ice.

Contaminants generally cause these issues in the water and a filter is the easiest option to prevent said containments from getting into the ice in the first place. Even cleaning your ice maker regularly will not necessarily mean you are free from contaminants.

It is common sense to realize that if your ice maker is dirty, it should be cleaned. If you do not have a filter installed then the natural minerals contained in water will eventually begin to build up in the freezer. If you have hard water then this can happen quickly.
