5 Things you should Never Put in the Dishwasher

Michael L.

The dishwasher. It’s one of the most helpful home appliances known to man. Do you remember when you rented your first apartment that included this amazing contraption? Your pupils dilated at the thought of being able to spend so much more time relaxing in the evenings instead of slaving away at your sink. Yes, for most of us, once we have a dishwasher, we never go back to the dishwasher-lacking life. It’s just not worth the hassle!

But did you know that you shouldn’t actually just throw all your kitchen utensils and gadgets into your dishwasher and run away? There are various items that simply won’t be cleaned properly by this dishwasher – they might even damage your machine if you try to stuff them in there.

We’re warning you now – keep these 5 things clear of your dishwasher – or else!

  1. Anything that’s made of wood. We’re looking at you, wooden spoons, cutting boards, and knives with wooden handles. Dishwasher detergent will scratch wood, and the heat of your dishwasher could cause the wood to warp or crack. You’re much better off rinsing and hand washing your wooden items.
  2. Nonstick cookware. Sure, it’s very handy for frying up some eggs, but it’s definitely not welcome in your dishwasher. The nonstick coating doesn’t hold up well in the dishwasher and can easily get damaged. Do yourself a favor and hand wash all nonstick cookware items.
  3. Lightweight plastic items. Many plastic cups, bowls, and other items simply can’t handle the heat of a dishwasher. They may even melt and become warped. Hardier plastic items like food processor bowls and plastic butting boards can usually go in the dishwasher – just put them on the top rack to be on the safe side.
  4. Kitchen knives. Don’t try to save time by putting your kitchen knives in the dishwasher – you’ll definitely regret it! The detergent dulls the blade and the hot water and eat can loosen the handles. Save yourself some major frustration and just wash your kitchen knives by hand – you’ll be glad you did!
  5. Heirloom anything. Grandma’s China? No. Silver, gold, bronze, or copper fancy pots or pans? Absolutely not. If you would be really sad if it got ruined, keep it away from the dishwasher.
