Smart appliances offer many conveniences, including the ability to notify you when they have a problem. Unfortunately, these notifications come in the form of digitally displayed fault codes that are impossible to decipher without the help of your user manual. If you have lost this manual, you can find the codes for many brands and models online.
You may wonder why you need to know your fault codes at all—can’t you just skip straight to calling the appliance repair technician? Well, you could, but you might risk calling a professional for a fix you could have done yourself. Take the fault codes for the Whirlpool Duet washer dryer combo for example.
FH : This code means the valves have been turned off, either because the machine could not detect any water coming in from the taps or because enough water has come in to fill the washer but the pressure switch did not trip and turn the water off. Before you call the repair company, make sure the water taps are on and the hoses are not detached, plugged, or kinked.
F02: This code means the washer is taking too long to drain. Check to make sure the drain hose is not blocked or kinked. If the hose looks good, you probably have a pump problem that needs professional Whirlpool appliance repair.
Sud : This fault code may appear if you’ve added too much detergent. Try running the machine through another rinse cycle and see if that clears the message. If not, you will need to call the pros to troubleshoot your pump.
FdU : You will see this fault code if the washer door cannot be opened after 6 tries. You can open the door manually by unplugging the machine, taking off the lower panel, reaching up inside the machine, and pulling the tear-shaped tab to unlock the door. This will let you get your laundry out, but you will have to call the repair tech to fix the door latch before using the washer again.
