Have you noticed that people seem more and more dependent on their smartphones with every passing moment? Appliance manufacturers have noticed too. Many companies, including GE, are catering to this trend with a new generation of “smart” appliances that can be controlled by and/or communicate with mobile apps on your phone.
Ovens : Tired of having to actually stick around the kitchen while your food cooks? New GE ovens tie you to your phone instead of your kitchen. Use the app to start preheating the oven on your way home from work, then set the timer to get alerts on your phone when your meal is ready. The app is also handy for double checking that you remembered to turn the oven or cooktop off last time you used it.
Fridges : New smart fridges help keep you safe from spoiled food by sending an alert if the door is left ajar or if the internal temp climbs above a safe food storage range, as might happen in a power outage. GE’s smart refrigerators can also remind you to fill your ice bin or change your water filter. They make ordering new water filters easy by including the model number you need in the notification.
Dishwashers : The main benefit of a smart dishwasher is that the appliance can monitor its own operations to check for leaks or malfunctions. For example, it can tell you if the drain is clogged or if something was blocking one of the sprayer arms during the wash cycle.
Washers: The new line of smart washing machines is designed to help prevent some common laundry errors. For example, they come with a SmartDispense reservoir for the laundry detergent, which automatically releases the exact right amount of detergent for the clothing type, load size and water temperature you’ve selected. Some even have cycles preprogrammed to treat the most common types of stains so you don’t have to remember what temperature a grass stained item should be washed at or how long to soak it.
Dryers : By sending an alert to your phone just before your clothes are ready to be removed, a smart dryer can help prevent your clothes from getting wrinkled. On settings that use a sensor rather than a timer to determine drying time, the app can also be used to keep you up to date on the estimated time remaining in the cycle.
Of course, even a smart appliance may have the occasional mechanical or software problem. At Authorized Appliance Repair, we will be encouraging our service techs to keep up to date on these new technologies so that we can continue to provide our customers with expert appliance repair and maintenance services.
