What to Do When the Water in Your Washer Won’t Stop Running

Martin G.

Learn the three components that should be investigated when a washing machine overflows.

What to Do When the Water in Your Washer Won’t Stop RunningIn a properly functioning top-loading washing machine, the water automatically turns on and off to fill the basket to the desired level during each wash or rinse cycle. But if you have an older machine, you may one day experience the unpleasant surprise of water failing to shut off, eventually overflowing the washer and flooding your laundry room.

If this happens to you, the very first thing you must do is shut off the water to the washing machine using the manual faucets located behind the machine. Then, call Authorized Appliance Repair for help. Our expert technicians will troubleshoot your machine to determine which of the following parts is to blame for your problem and then provide a targeted and effective washing machine repair.

Blocked Water Level Switch

Most top loading washing machines utilize a pressure switch to tell the water when to shut off during a wash or rinse cycle. The switch consists of a long plastic tube that extends down into the side of the wash basket. As water fills the basket, it also fills the tube, pushing the air inside the tube up harder and harder against a switch at the top. Once the pressure is sufficient, the switch is activated and the water shuts off. However, if the tube becomes blocked with minerals from hard water or if the switch itself goes bad, the water will never shut off.

Bad Water Valve

Valves at the points where the hot and cold water hoses enter your washing machine control the flow of water into the machine. If these valves become stuck open, or if their seals become lost or compromised, the water will continue to flow into the machine.

Faulty Controls

Another possible cause of an overflowing washing machine is faulty controls. In this scenario what happens is the controls fail to acknowledge the input from the pressure switch and never advance from one cycle to another. In some cases, this is a voltage problem, while in other cases the controls themselves are bad and would need to be replaced.

You can rely on Authorized Appliance Repair to tell you honestly what is wrong with your washer and how much it will cost to repair using quality parts.
