Check out these five things that could be causing your dishwasher to make too much noise. We will also provide some tips on how to fix each problem!

Why Is My Dishwasher So Loud: 5 Causes and Fixes

Tired of your dishwasher making noise? We get it! Let’s answer “why is my dishwasher so noisy”, go through the most common causes, and then learn how to fix them.

1. Dishes Loaded Too Close Together

This is one of the most common reasons your dishwasher is loud. If your dishes are loaded too close together, they will bang against each other and make a lot of noise. To fix this problem, simply rearrange your dishes so that they are not touching each other.

If you have any large pots or pans, make sure to place them in the middle of the dishwasher so that they don’t bang against the sides. Also, make sure that all of your dishes are facing downwards. This will help to reduce the amount of noise they make when the water is spraying them.

2. Obstructed Spray Arm

Another common cause of high dishwasher noise levels is an obstructed spray arm. This could also be the cause if your dishwasher leaves dishes dirty. If your spray arm is blocked by something, it will not be able to spin freely and will make a lot of noise. To get back to a quiet dishwasher, simply remove the obstruction and make sure that the spray arm can move freely.

3. Drain Pump Issue

If your dishwasher is making a grinding noise, it could be due to a problem with the drain pump. This part of your dishwasher helps to pump the water out of the appliance and into the drainage system. If it is not working properly, it will make a lot of noise.

To fix this problem, you will need to call a professional to come and take a look at your dishwasher. They will be able to diagnose the problem and fix it for you.

4. Impeller Making Noise

Dishwasher pump impellers are what push water through the dishwasher spray arms and drain the dishwasher. Impellers can wear over time and the fins on an impeller may break which will result in noise. Garbage can get trapped in the impeller and make noise as well.

To fix this problem, you will need to call a professional to service your dishwasher. You can also check out our guide for if your dishwasher won’t drain water to help you get the water out.

5. Defective Inlet Water Valve

If you hear a loud buzzing or screeching sound around 2 minutes into the cycle it may be a defective inlet water valve. The inlet water valve regulates how much water is put into the dishwasher. The start-up drain cycle begins first, followed by the water intake valve’s onset of filling the tub.

The water valve is located behind the lower access panel in front of the dishwasher. To access it you’ll need to disassemble the dishwasher, so we usually recommend calling a professional if this is the problem.
